How to Merge PDFs on Mac Without Installing Software

You don't need to buy or install anything to combine PDF files on a Mac. macOS already includes Preview, which can merge PDFs, and you can also use a browser tool if you'd rather not move pages around by hand. Here are both methods, step by step, and when each one makes more sense.

Method 1: Use Preview (built into macOS)

Apple's Preview app can combine PDFs by moving page thumbnails from one document into another. One thing to know first: Preview saves changes automatically. If you want to keep your original files unchanged, Apple recommends choosing File > Duplicate to make a copy of each PDF before you start.

Step 1: Open the PDFs you want to combine in Preview.

Step 2: In each open PDF, choose View > Thumbnails so the page thumbnails appear in the sidebar.

Step 3: Drag the thumbnails you want from the sidebar of one PDF into the sidebar of the other. Drop them between pages, or at the end of the document. To select pages that aren't next to each other, hold Command while you click them.

Step 4: To add a whole PDF, drag its icon from the Finder into the sidebar of the document you have open.

Step 5: Check the page order in the sidebar, then close the document. Because Preview saves automatically, the combined pages stay in the document you dropped them into.

Preview works well when you want to pick individual pages from several files or rearrange pages one by one. It gets fiddly when you have many files and simply want them joined end to end in a particular order.

Method 2: Use docwhip's Merge PDF tool in your browser

If you have a stack of files to join in order, our Merge PDF tool is quicker. It works in Safari, Chrome or any modern browser on your Mac.

Step 1: Open the Merge PDF page and add two or more PDF files. You can add up to 20 files, each up to 50 MB.

Step 2: Use the up and down arrows next to each file to put them in the order you want. The finished PDF follows the list from top to bottom.

Step 3: Click Merge and download the combined PDF.

The merging happens entirely in your browser: your files are read on your Mac and are not uploaded to our server. Pages are copied into the new file as they are, without re-compression, so text and images keep their original quality.

Which method should you use?

Use Preview if you need to take specific pages from different PDFs, or you're already editing in Preview. Use the Merge PDF tool if you want to join whole files in a set order, such as a cover letter, CV and certificates, or a month of invoices, without dragging thumbnails around.

Tips for a clean result

Name files in order first. Renaming them 01-cover.pdf, 02-report.pdf and so on makes it much easier to check the order before you merge.

Check the result. Open the merged PDF and scroll through every page before you send it.

Watch for protected files. Password-protected PDFs may not merge correctly. Remove the protection in a PDF reader first (you'll need the password).

Extras may not carry over. Merging copies the pages themselves. Bookmarks, fillable form fields and digital signatures from the original files may not survive, so keep the originals if you need them.
